Prompt #6 Why is it important to keep your children in education?

By: Nick Androvett

Education is the building block to life. Education will always be the strongest foundation in one's life. Education molds our future generations into a better person. We want our youth to be educated, to be up to date with current issues, and able to provide knowledge to the next generation. Keeping children in education will not only guarantee them to be better than who they are now but also can guarantee them at a better life in the long run. Education never leads to failure, it always has some positive impact on your life. In today's world it is a lot harder to get a job when you don't have a degree from college.

This is why at an early age children should be put into school and show them that education is important to them. Education not only starts the minds of young children but it also helps them get to know their social skills. Many kids make friends in education while learning. It is a perfect environment for a child so not putting your child into school is awful. As shown in the article,(http://www.winnipegboldness.ca/blog_details.php?blog_id=22), the quote "When considering the shaping of our future generations, we must look seven generations back and seven generations ahead. It is important to respect our past in terms of how we were raised and how we can develop previous teachings to ensure that our future is growing as well. It is important to stress these values and to create a path for future generations to follow" allows us to realize what needs to be done for children and why it is so important.

Children can grow into strong leadership roles if they get enough education. That is another reason why education is important, it develops our children into future leaders and impacts our society greatly. Therefore, Education is important in our society for our children.

The General Function of Water-Soluble Vitamins

by Roxy Zhang
Previously,  i was talking about the functions and deficiency diseases of fat- soluble functions. This time i am going to introduce the water- soluble vitamins and their primary functions in our body.

Vitamin C and Vitamin B are the only two vitamins belong to water- soluble vitamin. They are soluble in water and can be absorbed directly into blood stream from the small intestine (except B12 absorbed in ileum and stored in liver). Since their storage in body tissues is minimal- excess is secreted through the kidneys in the urinethey are hardly reach toxic level.

Vitamin C
It's an essential vitamin for the synthesis of collagen, neurotransmitter and hormones. It can enhance body's immune system, assist iron absorption and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. If Vitamin C is deficiency in body, it will trigger scurvy (lack VC prevent the synthesis of collagen) and cause blooding gum.

Vitamin B
Vitamin B contains thiamin(B1), riboflavin(B2), niacin(B3), B6, folate (B9), B12, biotin and pantothenic acid.
The function of thiamin is the synthesis of DNA and RNA, usually present in fish, beans, nuts and wheat.
Riboflavin helps synthesis of B6, folate and niacin from tryptophan. Food resources are usually dairy, green leafy veggies, eggs and liver.
The half amount of niacin needs in our body is come from tryptophan conversion. Niacin is a coenzyme which used in over 200 reactions in our body. It usually present in meat, fish, poultry and enriched flour and cereal. Lack of niacin will cause pellagra.
Folate (B6) is significant in DNA synthesis (maintenances of new cells or rapid growth cells). Pregnant women are recommended intake certain amount of folate acid in supplement form. Liver, legumes, leafy greens (especially spinach) contain folate.

The Benefits in Speech Therapy

By: Nick Androvett

Imagine having no voice to start your life. Surrounded by people on every corner and every sidewalk you pass by. Can't say anything to anyone, not how you feel and not how you think, making you feel empty inside. You are seeking help but can't find it making you always feel lonely. Stuck in a pitiless gaze with nowhere to go or hide. Always seeking help but never receiving it and having your words float away into the darkness. Now imagine a cure that will allow you to use that language. That will allow you to speak freely and gain your confidence back.

Speech therapy is that cure to help out those in need of a way to escape their inner problems. Speech and Language Therapy can give a child a way to communicate. In Speech therapy a child will strive to reach their goals no matter what it takes. Speech therapy provide those without a voice, a way to communicate through unaided and/or aided communication. Language is also important to a child because of how they communicate with other people. Speech therapy does not just help with only speech but it also helps with language skills. Speech Therapy is also important because it will help with social skills that will help the child make new friends and help the evolve throughout life into something that they always wanted to be. Not only will it give them their confidence back but it will help them with communication skills and reading.

All of those are all important needs in life if you want to be successful and live a good life. Our children are the building blocks of our society. Therefore, Speech therapy is very important in our society to help our children improve throughout life.

The General Functions of Fat-Soluble Vitamins

by Roxy zhang

Vitamins are dietary organic compounds that contain carbon inside. Our body just requires small amount of vitamin compared to macronutrients like protein. Although they are not our energy resources, they play a significant role in biochemical and physiological reactions and help us to use energy.
Vitamin can be divided into two parts one is fat-soluble vitamin, the other one is water- soluble vitamin. Water- soluble vitamin (vitamin B and C) can't stored in human bodies so we need to consume them frequently to maintain body's functions. And also, they are relatively less toxicity than fat- soluble vitamin so there is usually no upper limit for them. Fat- soluble vitamins are needed in periodic doses. Most of them have toxicity if people consume too much of them in supplement form. In this article i am going to focus on introducing fat-soluble Vitamins.

Vitamin D

It is a steroid hormone that regulated blood calcium and phosphorus levels so it's incredible important for bone metabolism. Many Chinese parents encourage their kids to bask in the sunshine in order to increase their calcium level in blood. The deficiency of VD will cause rickets, Osteomalacia and Osteoporosis. Vitamin D can be toxic: over VD (only extra supplement can be toxic) may cause Hypercalcemia.

Vitamin K
It's a blooding clotting factor (Koagultion) helps bind calcium to form protein to form clot. And It's also important in bone and teeth health. Vitamin K in foods are most vegetable and plant oil. Even though Vitamin K is fat soluble vitamin, it doesn't have upper limit so don't worry if intake extra VK.

Vitamin A
The most famous function of VA is it's benefit for human vision that prevent non-accidental blindness in children. It's not only good for eyes, also beneficial for gene expression, protein synthesis and cell differentiation. Very large doses of vitamin A (from supplement but not food) can be fatal.

Vitamin E
It's an antioxidant that can prevent chronic disease and reduces risk of heart disease by reducing inflammation. Nuts, seeds, whole grains and seed oil have huge amount of VE. The deficiency in VE can cause hemolytic anemia and fat malabsorption disease. It's relatively less toxicity but if it interferes with VK will cause hemorrhaging.

Veterinarian Job Outlook

By: Rachel Harvey

When going into the field of veterinary medicine it is important to know the possible everyday tasks that would have to be done as well as the employment part of the job. Veterinarians can work in private clinics, laboratories,, and even work for the government. Whatever or wherever you work, it will all have one goal in mind. It will be to diagnose and treat animals for their problems. You could even work at a higher level doing research to find a way to solve all of these problems faced in day to day life for these animals. Whether it be pets, livestock, or wild animals.
.
In good news, it is predicted that the employment for veterinarians will grow 9% from 2014- 2024. Once you are employed it is estimated that the annual salary is about $88,000. This was estimated in May 2015. Specialized Veterinarians will earn a higher salary based on their work. Of course this all requires years of school and a lot of money.

Veterinary medicine may not be for everyone and it is possible to have other occupations while still working with animals. There is the possibility of a veterinary technician, zoologist, wildlife biologists, Veterinary assistants, and many more.

Reasons Not to Diet

by Roxy zhang
Dieting is the fastest way to lose weight. However, does it good for your body? In fact, diets can be more dangerous to your health than beneficial to it. It is bad for your mental and physical health and cause irreversible results. Here are some reasons why diet are bad for you plus an simple introduction to an another healthy way to lose weight.

Problems with energy restriction
  • Results in eating patterns, deprive people of their natural ability to regulate normal eating.( counting calories, meal plan);

  • Regain weight and loss weight cycling.
HAES principles(HAES means health at every size.) is a healthy way to cause weight loss with activity (enjoy moment).

Prompt #3 - Exploring Communication

by: Tyler Frasher

For this prompt, I was able to interview my cousin, Cheryl Abernathy, to help explore communication in the nursing field.

Ms. Cheryl Abernathy works as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in the neonatal intensive care unit at Sparrow Regional Medical Center. She has been doing this for a year and a half. Prior to her job at Sparrow, she worked at Hurley Medical Center and Genesys Regional Medical Center simultaneously as a nurse practitioner for five years. Before that, she also spent nine years at Hurley Medical Center working as an RN.

The daily life of Ms. Abernathy is quite busy and full of tasks that must get done. She begins her twelve hour shifts by checking to see what patients she has for the day as soon as she arrives to the unit. She can see anywhere from eight to fifteen patients a day depending on their census. She then looks up all their information including vitals, intake and output, and lab work and then she makes a plan for them for the rest of the day. These plans are then discussed as she makes her rounds with the physician, beginning at nine o'clock in the morning and going until two or three in the afternoon if they're busy. Additionally, Abernathy is require to attend any delivery where the baby is deemed high risk. This means that while she is trying to visit and work with her patients, she can be called to go attend a delivery at any moment. On top of that, she is called to evaluate the baby if something seems to be wrong and she is responsible for consulting with parents who have the potential of delivering a high risk baby.

When it comes to communicating in this field, most of it is computerized. However, Abernathy is responsible for writing a daily progress note for each patient as well as writing out their daily plan. This helps with billing and it helps inform the nurse of the daily plan if he/she was not present during rounds. It also helps the night person see what has been done for the day. Several different types of notes even have templates built into the program to make documenting easier including, prescriptions, which are printed off and given to the patient at discharge. However if anything out of the ordinary must be completed, she always handwrites the note that way there is a paper trail and she can make sure it was documented.

A main misconception of the field that stands out to Ms. Abernathy is that people think a nurse practitioner and bedside nurse are the same thing solely based on the word "nurse" being in both of the titles. She feels as though physician's assistants are more respected just because of the word "physician" in their title even though they both do the same work that a physician does. She does her part by trying to inform her patients and their families when they ask to speak to the doctor instead. However, nurse practitioners are becoming more popular and Ms. Abernathy hopes that with changes in state guidelines and how they can practice that nurse practitioners will be more respected and accepted across the country.
